New and ongoing Projects

BMD's at Sea

The Federation of Family History Societies, in conjunction with Findmypast.co.uk, is running a project to index BMD's at sea from 1854 -1888. Once transcribed the records will be fully searchable by any field and will include the name of the ship. All societies who take part in this project will receive royalties so we need as many of you as possible to volunteer, and you don't have to live in the UK to take part. All you need is a home computer with a Broadband connection.

The project involves logging on to the site where you will see a page of a register. Directly underneath this is a space in which to transcribe the entry. You can view an example on FFHS website. You can spend as much or as little time as you wish on this, but please remember to state which FHS you are helping so that the royalties for your work are awarded to us.Volunteers will find full instructions are given online as well as help and advice being available from each society project co-ordinator. I will be taking on this role for our society.

If you want to take part by giving a few hours, days - or even weeks - please let me know.

War Memorials Project

Image of Rothwell War Memorial

For the past three summers and with the help of many friends and relatives, I have been photographing and copying the names from War Memorials. I have confined my search to places that have a Leeds post code or pay community tax to Leeds City Council. This extends from Ilkley in the north west, Tadcaster and Sherburn in Elmet in the east, south to Morley and north to Wetherby. As my sense of direction is nil, I hope that is correct.

I am appealing to members as to the whereabouts of memorials, which are in unusual places. I do know some are in obscure places, having been removed from buildings before they were demolished; or are still in situ but that the building has had a change of use. One from Calverley that had been in the Wesleyan Chapel before it was taken down in 1948 was discovered languishing in a warehouse in Leeds. This has been returned, renovated, rededicated, and is now in The Church in the Garden', Calverley.
